A group of Black Watch soldiers who plan to swap their weapons for water bottles as they embark on a mammoth trek were in Perth at the weekend to drum up support for their cause.
The seven-strong team were met by local MP Pete Wishart and a number of young cadets as they raised awareness of the Tartan Cassino event.
In a bid to raise thousands of pounds for armed forces charities, the men will cycle 1750 miles in just 14 days from the historic site of the Battle of Monte Cassino in Italy to Edinburgh Castle.
The fund-raising trek was the idea of Sergeant Richard Clark, who had heard how soldiers from earlier generations of The Royal Regiment of Scotland had fought with “pride and honour” at Monte Cassino, playing a huge role in the 1943 campaign.
This was seen as a fitting starting point for the innovative cycling trip, which will cross four countries.
The group will fly out to Rome on March 18, leaving the battlefield three days later as they begin their two-week challenge, which will see them averaging 125 miles a day.
They will travel through Italy, Switzerland, France and the UK, as well as crossing the Alps and sleeping by the road side.
Funds raised will be shared between Help for Heroes, The Black Watch Association, Erskine and The Royal Regiment of Scotland Association.
