James Crosby, one of NHS Tayside’s longest-ever serving members of staff, has died aged 69.

Mr Crosby, who spent 46 years working in the neurosurgical theatres at Dundee Royal Infirmary and at Ninewells Hospital, died on Saturday at the Victoria Hospital following a short illness.

Born in Lochee in 1941, Mr Crosby was educated at St Mary’s Primary and St John’s High School in the city.

After leaving, he began his working life as a turner in Monifieth, following a request from his parents to learn a trade.

The day he completed that apprenticeship, Mr Crosby announced to his parents that having followed their wishes he would now follow his own career path.

The following week, in 1963, he began work as a porter at Dundee Royal Infirmary before swiftly transferring to a position as a theatre technician in the neurosurgical unit, moving to Ninewells in the 1970s.

In 2007 he was the recipient of NHS Scotland’s Unsung Hero Award in recognition of his dedication and service, before retiring last summer.

Mr Crosby is survived by his son James and brothers John and Brian.

His funeral will take place at Dundee Crematorium on Monday at 1.15pm, to which all are welcome.
