The people of Britain will never forget the near-century of proud service given by 111 (Fighter) Squadron, it has been claimed as the famous “Tremblers” were disbanded.
With the iconic Tornado F3 retiring from service to be replaced by Typhoons Treble One squadron stood down amid emotional scenes at RAF Leuchars.
The occasion was marked in traditional style with two fly-pasts; first showcasing the past, by a tight formation of four Tornados and then, providing a glimpse of the future, three Typhoons.
Meanwhile, a disbandment parade took place on the ground. All vantage points around the Leuchars base were busy with amateur photographers, desperate to catch a glimpse of the historic proceedings.
Within the base itself there was a feeling of immense pride as, standard held aloft, the squadron paraded for the very last time.
Once members of 111 (Fighter) Squadron had marched off the runway at Leuchars, the men and women of 6 Squadron stood forward symbolising the change from Tornados to Typhoons at the base.
Among those taking the salute was Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton.
“It is a great honour to be here today to thank the ‘Tremblers’ and to celebrate what 111(F) Squadron has done for this nation,” he said.
“As well as providing air defence for the UK, the squadron has done some remarkable things and is iconic in the RAF’s history.
“The squadron has given Scotland and the UK absolutely unbelievable service,” continued Sir Stephen. “Your performance will live on in the minds of the nation for the tremendous service given.”
“There is no doubt that Treble One has been a great squadron.”
Invited dignitaries, former pilots and other RAF personnel then watched in silent respect as, with heads held high and in perfect step, members of 111(F) Squadron marched away for the very last time.
Air Commodore Harry Atkinson, Station Commander at RAF Leuchars, paid tribute to the squadron, saying, “This disbandment is part of our successful transition to the future as the Tornado F3 is retired from service and the Typhoons of Number 6 Squadron take post.
“111(F) Squadron has had a long and distinguished history. I am certain that all former squadron members would be as proud as I am of the way that current members have diligently performed their duty, right to the very end.”
Wing Commander Mark Gorringe, officer commanding 111(F) Squadron, said, “The squadron will leave Leuchars with our heads held high. The northern QRA role is a critical defence task and represents a fitting end to this chapter of the squadron’s illustrious history ahead of our honourable disbandment.
“On behalf of the squadron, I would like to thank the many sections across RAF Leuchars whose work makes effective QRA possible it is a true team effort.
“We also recognise the important support we have had from the local community in Fife and across Scotland.”Click here for a full photo gallery.
