Dundee University Men’s Basketball Club has emerged victorious from an enthralling tussle with their local rivals Abertay University to lift the Conference Cup.

The cup, the culmination of the Scottish Universities Sports Championship, was secured by 75 points to 62 at the Institute of Sports and Exercise on Hawkhill on Wednesday.

Dundee University retained the bragging rights, having beaten Abertay in last week’s Tay Varsity Challenge match.

Team captain Conor Dalby said, “It was a great occasion for the whole club and all the sweeter because it was against Abertay, so it was good local rivalry.

“It’s our AGM tonight as well so the celebrations start right after that.”

The Conference Cup final was part of the biggest student sports event to be held in Scotland this year.

Over 300 competitors in 29 teams from 11 institutions competed at the British Universities and Colleges Conference Cup Finals.

The finals provide the high point of the inter-university sporting calendar and the success of last year’s event which the university also hosted saw the organising body, Scottish Universities Sport, decide to return.

Dundee principal Professor Pete Downes said, “I am delighted once again to welcome the BUCS Conference Cup Finals to the University of Dundee following last year’s successful hosting of the event.”
