Over 200 hardy souls will wake up to sore legs this morning after the first Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp at the weekend.

At Blairgowrie on Saturday morning yompers began a 54-mile hike through Kirkmichael, Spittal of Glenshee and Kirkton of Glenisla.

Walkers came from across Britain, with over £200,000 thought to have been raised for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and the Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust.

Completing the course first was Team A soldiers from the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers 1st Battalion from Carrick, North Yorkshire, who finished in 14 hours 27 minutes.

It wasn’t all hard work though yompers enjoyed respite at checkpoints with activities such as clay pigeon shooting, archery and an assault course.

Participant and Soldiers’ Charity chief of staff Robin Bacon said, “The yomp has been a great success in its first year-albeit absolutely exhausting.

“We’re very pleased indeed with all the local support we have had as well as the enthusiasm and sheer willpower of all the participants.

“We couldn’t have staged this event without the unstintingly generous support of the Alliance Trust and their staff, many of who raised large amounts of sponsorship.

“Many more people, particularly in this beautiful part of Scotland, will now be much more aware of the important work of The Soldiers’ Charity.”
