Plans for a ‘Perth city square’ on show at public exhibition

The plans to demolish the City Hall and put a new civic square at the heart of Perth have gone on display for public scrutiny.

Last week, Perth and Kinross Council submitted listed building and planning applications for the hall demolition and the creation of a new square.

The details of the design for the new public space now form an exhibition in the St John’s shopping centre which will remain on show until Sunday.

A planning officer was on hand on Monday to discuss the proposal to replace the Edwardian listed building, but he stressed that any comments would have to be submitted in writing or by email.

The plans reveal there would be steps around a central amphitheatre and graphics show how it would look hosting markets or as the site of a winter skating rink.

The future of the city hall has always provoked strong opinions, with those with a sentimental attachment to the building still calling for it to be retained in some shape or form. However, the council is adamant that this is not a majority position.

“This (demolition) was the preference of a large number of people who took part in the public consultation, and of the local business community,” said a council spokesman.Information on the civic square proposal is available at www.pkc.gov.uk/citysquare
