The Tay Road Bridge could be temporarily closed later this month to prevent motorists being distracted by the demolition of four Dundee tower blocks.
Bridge officials and Tayside Police have held discussions about closing the crossing briefly as the Hilltown multis fall on July 31.
There are fears that motorists could be distracted by the collapse of the structures, which tower over Dundee and are directly in the eyeline of drivers making their way towards the city.
Preliminary talks have taken place already and although no firm details have been confirmed, it is hoped any traffic delays will be short.
Bridge manager Iain MacKinnon said, “We have been in discussion with the police and we are still to reach a final agreement. Any closure will be a case of minutes, though it will be extremely short.”
The demolition will see four tower blocks Carnegie, Jamaica, Maxwelltown and Wellington brought down in a series of controlled explosions that will change the Dundee skyline forever.
Around 600 homes and 50 commercial properties in the area will be evacuated for a short time during the event.
Vantage points in the city and across the river are expected to be at a premium as people try to view the demise of the towers, which were constructed in the late 1960s.
Mr MacKinnon admits that being asked to close the bridge for such an event is unusual, adding, “The only time we’ve ever closed is for weather and planned works.”
Sergeant Craig McBean said, “The four coming down at the same time would be a distraction and that’s why we’re deploying these measures to make sure that any motorists do get across the Tay Road Bridge safely.”
