Large turnout for ‘reinvigorated’ Dundee Half Marathon
ByNews reporter
The weather stayed mercifully dry as a record number of runners took part in the Dundee Half Marathon on Sunday.
Around 500 entrants set off from the start line opposite the Mansion House in Camperdown Park before going through Templeton Woods as the course followed the northern part of the green circular route, continuing out to Monifieth and finishing at the Barnhill Rock Garden.
The strong turnout marked a significant turnaround in fortunes for race organiser Eventful Management, which took over an event which last year attracted just 218 runners.
There were fears torrential rain in the early hours would lead to this year’s race being a washout, but company spokesman Nicholas Kydd said it went very well.
“Next year we plan to run a marathon and half marathon simultaneously,” he added. “There has not been a marathon in Dundee for three years but with 2012 being an Olympic year there appears to be a reinvigoration for running generally.”
The winners were Colin McGill from Edinburgh, who finished in one hour 17 minutes in the senior men’s section, and Charlotte Fortune from Bo’ness who crossed in a time of one hour 33 minutes.Click here for a full photo gallery
