A seven-year-old boy was fighting for his life in hospital last night following a serious road accident in Angus.
The boy sustained serious head injuries when a Vauxhall Corsa was in collision with a tractor on the B961 Carmyllie to Redford road on the outskirts of Arbroath.
Emergency services and the Ninewells Hospital trauma team were scrambled following the crash at 9.50am. The boy, a rear-seat passenger, was freed by firefighters using hydraulic cutting gear.
He was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken by ambulance, under police escort, to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.
Two other passengers, also children, were unhurt.
The woman driving the car believed to be his grandmother suffered a minor neck injury. The 48-year-old tractor driver was not hurt.
The road, which runs from north-west of the Angus town to the east of Monifieth, was closed while crash investigators conducted inquiries into the accident.
“The boy was removed from the rear of the car on a spinal board and was put in the care of paramedics,” said a Tayside Fire and Rescue spokesman. “Space was then created to allow the removal of the female driver from the vehicle.
“She was also removed on a spinal board and put in the care of paramedics. Firefighters remained in attendance to assist police clear the scene.”
An appliance from Arbroath and another from Blackness Road in Dundee, which had been at the Angus fire station at the time, attended the incident.
