The Southern Fried Festival has been a hailed a resounding success, with over 4000 attendances at Perth’s fourth annual celebration of American roots music.
Festival-goers enjoyed sell-out shows by Iris Dement, Raul Malo and Abigail Washburn, Justin Townes Earle and Savoy Family Cajun Band in Perth Theatre as well as The Blind Boys of Alabama, Lyle Lovett and Stax in Perth Concert Hall.
Smaller gigs in other venues, workshops and southern fried soul food also attracted considerable crowds.
Coming hot on the heels of hit West End musical Blood Brothers in the second week of July, the Southern Fried Festival tops off a successful month for the concert hall and theatre.
The first major West End musical to take place at the concert hall, Blood Brothers attracted audiences of more than 5500 to the venue.
Jane Spiers, chief executive of Horsecross Arts, which runs both venues, said, “Southern Fried and Blood Brothers were two very different events but, clearly, they both struck a chord with audiences near and far.
“It has been fantastic to see Perth Theatre and Perth Concert Hall so busy through the traditionally quieter summer months, but no surprise that the extraordinary line-up of talented artists at our Southern Fried Festival has once again tempted fans of Americana from across Scotland and beyond to visit Perth for a memorable weekend of song, sunshine and the now famous Southern Fried good cheer.”
