Dundee lose yet another striker to injury

Dundee boss Barry Smith may only have two fit strikers available for Saturday’s crucial clash with Ross County.

Jake Hyde was already ruled out with a long-term knee injury and now Scotland Under-19 star Leighton McIntosh has picked up an achilles problem.

If it persists, that will leave Smith with just Steven Milne and Graham Bayne who has only just returned from injury himself to choose from against the Staggies.

He said: “Leighton has a problem with his achilles and he didn’t train this morning but it is too early to say whether he will make it for Saturday.

“Jamie McCluskey is also a doubt for the weekend with a groin/hamstring injury.

“Jake will definitely be missing for another wee while but we aren’t sure exactly how long.

“We haven’t had a lot of injuries this season but most of them have happened to our front men.

“I think there has only been a run of three games where I have been able to pick the same strikers. It is not ideal but there is nothing we can do about it.”

Smith admitted that he is under no illusions about how difficult Saturday’s game against Derek Adams’ side will be.

County are currently sitting second top of the First Division and moved to within a point of league leaders Morton thanks to a thumping 4-0 win in their last game against Ayr United.

However, Smith and the Dundee squad are determined to regain the winning habit and to turn Dens Park into a fortress once more after what has been an indifferent start to the season.

Smith added: “Ross County are a very good team and they will be playing with a lot of confidence now after a good result against Ayr.

“They will be very difficult opposition and I think with the big squad they have, they will be up there challenging.

“They have a lot of lot of players who have experience of this division. But I like to think we have good experience as well and we are at home.

“We want to start making Dens like it was last season a place where we don’t get beaten.”
