Work to install a 100-metre wind turbine at FMC Technologies’ Pitreavie manufacturing base in Dunfermline has been completed.

Specialists Wind Direct carried out the work to instal of the 1.5 megawatt turbine which could supply up to 40% of the site’s electricity needs.

The project at FMC, a global provider of technology solutions for the energy industry, follows four years of extensive planning.

As leaders in the design and manufacturing of innovative equipment for use in the subsea oil and gas industry, this pioneering environmental project is a first for FMC Technologies.

Funding for the project was arranged by on-site generation specialists Wind Direct through Triodos bank, with Triodos Renewables owning the project.

Wind Direct has taken the project through planning, engineering and construction on behalf of FMC and will go on to operate the wind turbine once it is made fully operational next month.

Before being energised, the wind turbine will undergo testing and, once operational, will have the potential to reduce the company’s carbon emissions by over 2,000 tonnes a year.

Completion systems manager for FMC Technologies UK, Dan Neelon, said: “Our commitment to reducing the impact we have on the environment is extremely important to FMC, and bringing a wind turbine on-site which will directly help us to mitigate our impact is a project that we are incredibly excited and proud of.

“It is wonderful to see this project nearing completion.”

Frances Karki, chief operating officer at Wind Direct, added: “It has been a pleasure to work with FMC Technologies on the development and installation of the project.

“From November, FMC will be using green energy to power their manufacturing processes at no capital cost, and the wind turbine will be a welcome addition to Wind Direct’s growing portfolio of quality on-site generation projects.”

Established in 1975, the Dunfermline operation, which has a research and development facility in Glasgow and engineering support office in Aberdeen, is one of six major subsea production sites globally with over 650 people based in Scotland.

Last month the firm announced it would create 70 jobs at its Dunfermline plant and 170 at its site in Bellshill.

The company’s core product range includes subsea Christmas trees and wellheads, equipment used to control the flow and assist in the extraction and of oil and gas subsea.
