Former Dundee United manager Alex Smith says it will be an ”absolute disgrace” if Peter Houston is sacked.
Smith was in the Tannadice dugout on Tuesday night alongside Steven Pressley as Falkirk knocked the Tangerines out of the Scottish Communities League Cup on penalties.
As well as assisting Pressley, Smith is chairman of the League Managers’ Association in Scotland and is astonished that Houston appears to be under threat of the axe.
”I think it is an absolute disgrace,” he said. ”Peter Houston has done a fantastic job since he took over from Craig Levein.
”He had helped create a situation where Dundee United were one of the strongest sides in the country. He then lost four key players in the summer and his hands were tied when it came to replacing them because the club don’t have the money to do it.
”He oversaw these players’ development, and in particular, that of David Goodwillie, who brought in more than £2 million reputedly. Who gets the credit for that?
”It is (less than) two years since he won the Scottish Cup and he has taken United into Europe two seasons running.
”People forget very quickly. It’s a scandal. I care about that club but to talk about sacking Peter Houston after everything he has done for the club is arrogant beyond belief.”
