An 84-year-old man has died after being hit by a bus in Glenrothes.
The accident happened at around 10.20am on Monday at the town’s bus station.
It is understood the man, who was from Windygates, was struck by a reversing bus in front of stances three and four.
He was rushed to Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline but died of his injuries about an hour and a half after the incident.
Fife Constabulary said the man’s name would not be released until his family had been contacted.
Deputy head of road policing Inspector Brenda Sinclair said: ”We are currently investigating the full circumstances… I would appeal to any member of the public who was in the area of the bus station this morning and who witnessed this tragic incident to come forward.”
Signs warning pedestrians to keep to walkways are visible throughout the station.
A spokeswoman for Stagecoach in Fife said: ”At around 10.20am today a vehicle on service 37 from Glenrothes to Kirkcaldy was involved in an incident at Glenrothes Bus Station in which an elderly pedestrian was injured.
”The incident occurred on a non-public area within the bus station which is reserved for vehicles only. We have subsequently learned that the pedestrian has passed away and our immediate thoughts and condolences are with his family at this very sad time.
”Safety is our absolute priority. We are assisting police with their inquiries and will also carry out our own investigation into this incident.”
Members of the public said buses were diverted around the scene as the emergency services tried to save the man’s life. A man at the bus station said people frequently crossed the tarmac in front of the stances.
He added: ”If you come from the pedestrian crossing, human instinct is to make a beeline for wherever you need to go. If someone ran out, the driver wouldn’t be able to see anything.”
