Fife Council has joined Sustrans Scotland to encourage more children to walk and cycle to school.
A cycling officer has been appointed to work with youngsters for two years, showing them how to maintain their bikes and ensure they are safe.
James Sloggie will run a number of initiatives, events and activities at schools across Fife.
He said: ”I’m looking forward to getting fun cycling activities happening across Fife’s and surrounding communities cycling is great for a child’s health, independence and confidence.
”This is a great opportunity for me to work with a dedicated charity and to continue working with schools and the community to promote something I am really passionate about.”
‘Be bright and be seen’ days to keep young cyclists safe during the dark winter nights are set to take place after half-term.
Funding for the initiative has come from Bike Hub and the Scottish Government.
Sustrans works with over 1,000 schools across the UK and claims schools working with the charity typically see the number of children regularly cycling to school at least double in the first year.
The charity is also working with the council on the Make Your Move Kirkcaldy initiative.
Over the next four years the project aims to improve walking and cycling routes in the town, while encouraging people of all ages to walk and cycle more for everyday journeys.
