RAF Leuchars says the fact its personnel did not represent the RAF at Cupar’s Remembrance Day service was ”unfortunate”, but insisted the base will never forget the fallen.
The comments came after Courier readers contacted us to say Leuchars personnel were conspicuous by their absence from the wreath-laying on Sunday.
One described an ”awkward silence” at the time alloted for the RAF members to place their wreath.
However, a spokesman for RAF Leuchars said its personnel try to attend as many events in an official capacity as is possible.
”It is unfortunate the RAF was not represented in Cupar this year and we will be engaging with community leaders to make sure this is not the case in 2012,” the spokesman said.
”With our personnel currently supporting military operations overseas notably in Afghanistan RAF Leuchars is very proud to continue to commemorate the sacrifices made by those who have served in previous conflicts.”
The spokesman said RAF Leuchars personnel have ”attended a number of Remembrance events in Scotland honouring the fallen, including locally in St Andrews, Guardbridge, Leuchars and at Dundee Festival of Remembrance.”
”A detachment from the station paraded through the streets of Edinburgh on Remembrance Sunday and the Air Officer for Scotland and Station Commander RAF Leuchars, Air Commodore Gavin Parker, joined other service chiefs in laying a wreath at a ceremony at the Stone of Remembrance on the Royal Mile.”
