Family and friends place memorial bench in tribute to Cupar soldier Darren Lackie

A much-loved soldier who died during what should have been a dream holiday in Portugal will never be forgotten in his hometown of Cupar.

Big-hearted locals were devastated when Darren Lackie died in March during a break with his girlfriend Ashleigh.

Determined to keep his memory alive, they established a fund in his name and a memorial picnic bench in the Haugh Park has been officially unveiled.

A veteran of conflict in Afghanistan, Black Watch squaddie Darren was described by regimental chiefs as a ”brave and tenacious” rising young star.

The 21-year-old’s life was cut short when he died in disputed circumstances.

Darren was found dead in the street in the resort of Albufeira with a serious head injury. Family friend Rod Whyte set up the memorial fund in Darren’s name, saying he hoped it would help to ensure the young squaddie’s memory is preserved.

A dedication ceremony for the new bench was held on Saturday.

Well over £1,500 has been raised in recent months, and tickets are now on sale for the forthcoming Darren’s Big Thank You Bash for all who have helped the fund over the last year.

It will be held on December 17 at Watts Granary in Cupar.
