A refurbished leisure centre opened its doors for the first time at the weekend.
The Carnegie in Dunfermline is the first of three in Fife to be completed as part of the Future of Leisure programme. Centres in Glenrothes and Kirkcaldy will also be constructed.
Councillor Brian Goodall, chairman of the housing and communities committee, said it was a proud day.
”The next chapter in the history of the Carnegie leisure centre has begun,” he announced. ”I don’t think members of the public will believe their eyes because the place has been completely transformed.”
Fife Sports and Leisure Trust will manage and operate the centre on behalf of the council.
Over the weekend, visitors got their first look at the 100-station gym. The sports hall and squash courts, along with creche, will open today.
Meanwhile, the pools and health suite will open on Monday December 12 with a full programme of swimming and fitness classes from January 9.
The swimming programme will accommodate 1,500 people and swimmers of all ages and abilities.
Fitness class enthusiasts will have more than 100 to choose from, with aqua fit, bodypump, cardiac pilates, power circuit and zumba among the options.
Trust chief executive Ed Watson said: ”The refurbished centre is a fantastic addition to the 13 leisure centres the trust manages across Fife. We are confident that communities will be very impressed.
”The trust is committed to making affordable and accessible leisure opportunities available for people of all ages and fitness levels so that more people can get active and enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.”
An official opening ceremony is planned for February.
