Garry Kenneth told big-money moves don’t come cheap

Dundee United defender Garry Kenneth has been told he must star for the Tangerines if he is to earn his dream move to England.

Kenneth’s contract runs out at the end of the season and he has expressed a desire to continue his career south of the border, just as former clubmates Craig Conway, Prince Buaben and Morgaro Gomis have done.

The trio won their moves to the English Championship to Cardiff City, Watford and Birmingham respectively on the back of good displays for United last season and Kenneth has been challenged to do the same.

”Garry is in the same boat as lads like Craig Conway, Prince Buaben and Morgaro Gomis were last year,” said Tannadice assistant boss Gary Kirk. ”He is out of contract and has stated that he wants to move on.

“I am sure he will give 100% for the first team and keep playing well for Dundee United. If he wants to get a move he has to play well to get one. Last year we knew we were losing a few guys but they did the business and got good moves on the back of it. The challenge for Garry is to do the same.

”When the boys left last season we shook hands and wished them all the best. This is what happens in football.

”With freedom of contract these days and players over the age of 24 being able to move on for nothing a lot of teams will be in the same position.

”Garry has seen his old team-mates go down to England and play for big clubs so of course he wants to try that as well.

”The thing at the moment is to keep producing the goods for United. We don’t have any problems with it because he has been great for us and he will be in the team so long as he is performing well.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Danny Swanson has returned to light training and could make a comeback from his medial ligament injury before Christmas.

”Swanny has stepped up his running a bit so he is not too far away from coming back,” added Kirk.
