The story of the historic Hospitalfield House in Arbroath is being made into a book.
The publication of the short history of Hospitalfield comes a year ahead of the bicentenary of Patrick Allan-Fraser, whose vision still drives Hospitalfield today.
In his foreword to the book, simply entitled Hospitalfield House, Sir Mark Jones, former director of the V&A London and first honorary patron of Hospitalfield, refers to the house and its contents as a ”unique survival ” very much as Patrick Allan-Fraser left them on his death in 1890.”
He notes: ”This short history of Patrick Allan-Fraser’s Hospitalfield shows how the son of an Arbroath stocking maker turned around the fortunes of the Hospitalfield estates, made a mark on the international art scene, contributed to the Arts and Crafts Movement in Scotland and left a legacy to art, ideas and architecture in his home town which endures 200 years after his birth.”
Visitors to Hospitalfield have regularly requested more information on the house, its history and contents.
The short book, written by Hospitalfield director Willie Payne, draws together aspects of family lore, architecture and art.
The book will be launched at Hospitalfield’s Christmas open day on Sunday, December 11, priced £6.50 or two for £12 and will also be available at www.hospitalfield.org.uk
All proceeds will go towards Hospitalfield.Click here for a photo tour of Hospitalfield House
