Mystery Gumtree job ad sends hundreds to Union 39 nightclub

A Dundee landlady has been left mystified after 300 people arrived at her bar for job interviews she knew nothing about.

Kirsten Bruce, who runs Union 39 on Union Street, said her premises was swamped with people who had been asked to attend group interviews after applying for jobs through an internet site.

The applicants had been responding to an advert for jobs at a new venue, with Ms Bruce saying they were then told to attend interviews at her establishment.

But neither she nor the owner had been made aware of any such arrangement, and she was concerned to hear that some of the applicants had disclosed personal details to the person behind the advert.

Ms Bruce said: “I think about 300 people must have turned up last week and I even had one boy come in on Thursday this week.

“One woman said she had given her bank details to prove she had a UK bank account. Others have sent off their national insurance numbers.”

Ms Bruce told The Courier that those who arrived at her premises had responded to an advert on the Gumtree website.

After sending their CV to the advertiser, emails appear to have been sent out requesting applicants to attend interviews at Union 39, though stating that this would not be their place of work.

When contacted by The Courier, Gumtree advised users not to proceed if they had any doubts about a prospective employer. Were you one of those who responded to the job ad? If so, please contact us by emailing online@thecourier.co.uk or by phoning 01382 575294
