Family and friends of an amateur Dundee footballer are reeling from his sudden death at the weekend.
Shaun Kelly (20), of Thomson Gunners, collapsed at Drumgeith Park during a Dundee Saturday Morning Football League (DSMFL) match.
He was rushed to Ninewells Hospital following on-field attempts by fellow players and then paramedics to revive him. Sadly, Mr Kelly was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
The exact cause of his death is not yet known.
His family have been too upset to comment, and team-mates are also said to be distraught at Saturday’s events.
League secretary Steve McSwiggan expressed his shock at Mr Kelly’s death and praised the actions of those who tried to save the young man’s life.
”We are all devastated at these events and the thoughts and best wishes of all teams, players and committee members of the DSMFL go out to his family and team-mates,” he said.
”It is a very sad day for all connected with our league and we extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family.”
Following his collapse, a number of calls from concerned spectators and players were made to the Scottish Ambulance Service.
Opposition players from DK Raiders a team of dental students were among those who administered CPR to Mr Kelly in an attempt to revive him.
It is understood that Mr Kelly’s stepmother has contacted the squad to pass on her gratitude for their efforts, while others have posted messages of support on the team’s Facebook page.
Mr McSwiggan added: ”The guys from DK Raiders are to be commended for the professional manner in which they dealt with this totally unexpected event.
”I was not myself at Drumgeith but those who were there have commented on the efforts of these lads to keep Shaun alive.
”I know they have been deeply upset that he didn’t make it, but they deserve praise along with the paramedic for their calm and caring handling of a very distressing event.”
