A disqualified van driver who smashed into Broughty Ferry level crossing leaving a gate lying across the track has been jailed for six months.
Craig Sime’s actions in July risked ”catastrophic consequences”, Dundee Sheriff Court heard.
Sime (27), of Westcroft Place, admitted failing to comply with red railway crossing lights and colliding with the barrier on July 7.
Depute fiscal Trina Sinclair told the court a signal operator watching CCTV at 11.10am activated the red lights after checking the crossing was clear of pedestrians and vehicles.
Sime’s agent, Scott Norrie, said: ”He appears to accept responsibility for what was an absolutely stupid error of judgment.”
Mr Norrie asked Sheriff Tom Hughes to consider a community-based disposal, but Sheriff Hughes said: ”I take a very dim view of this. This was a very selfish act that could have had catastrophic consequences to yourself and the public.”
He jailed Sime for six months and banned him from driving for three years.
