Alex Spink, the well-known Arbroath fisherman, has died suddenly after a stroke. He was 80.
Born in Arbroath in 1931, Mr Spink attended Abbey Primary School and Arbroath High School before starting his career as a fisherman when he was 14.
He married Mary in 1959 and had three sons Alex Jr in 1960 and twins Andrew and Norman in 1962.
After more than 30 years at sea he established the fish business Alex Spink & Sons in 1977.
He bought a second-hand Hillman car and adapted it to sell fish by removing the back seats.
Mrs Spink started selling fish weekly in Perth and gradually built up a round that took in Angus, Stirling, Perth and Dundee.
In 1980 they obtained a busy fish route in central Scotland, which Andrew still carries out today.
In the same year the family business purchased its first shop in Blairgowrie, which was run by Norman, who died last year.
Mr Spink retired in 1987, after around 43 years at sea, but continued to have an active interest in the business, which all three sons entered.
Having owned the fishing boat Guiding Star he continued to work on smokies and deliveries in his retirement.
In 1992 the business bought another shop in Lochee, Dundee, and expanded its wholesale business, supplying fish to Edinburgh and London.
Mr Spink was a member of Arbroath Male Voice Choir and taught himself the fiddle in his retirement, playing with Carnoustie Traditionals.
He was also a member of Arbroath & District Indoor Bowling Club and a passionate hillwalker in his younger days.
He is survived by his sons Alex Jr and Andrew and by five grand-children.
