Jimmy Brownlee, former owner of The Planet bar in Lochee, Dundee, has died. He was 51.
He had been ill recently and died suddenly after being admitted to Ninewells Hospital.
Mr Brownlee’s family spent three generations as publicans in Lochee. His grandfather, and then his parents, ran the Central Bar in Lorne Street.
When it was knocked down, the family had The Planet built in South Road in 1975.
Mr Brownlee was brought up in Adelaide Place and went to Rosebank Primary and Harris Academy before doing a geography degree at Aberdeen University.
He took over the running of The Planet alongside his mother in the mid-1980s after his father’s death. Later he ran the bar with his wife Nicki, before selling up in 2004.
Latterly he had been a licensing standards officer with Fife Council.
Mr Brownlee was a well-known figure in the pub trade, having served as president of the Dundee Licensed Trade Association and as vice-president of the Scottish Licensed Trade Association.
He is survived by his wife and their sons Fraser and Calum.
