Pupils across Scotland have begun sitting their exams.

Six weeks of tests started on Wednesday with economics and computing studies and will end on June 8 with sociology and early education and childcare.

Nearly 159,000 candidates around 17,000 of them at schools in Tayside and Fife will be sitting a total of 740,000 papers ranging from Access all the way up to Advanced Highers at more than 500 schools and colleges.

There is no excuse for any pupils to forget when they are sitting an exam as the Scottish Qualifications Authority has offered a free smartphone app that lets users keep track of their timetable.

More than 34,000 candidates have also signed up to receive their results by text or email on August 7, with the rest having to wait for the postman to deliver their certificate.

Scotland’s chief examining officer Dr Janet Brown said: ”Good qualifications are probably more important today than they have ever been. Our qualifications genuinely capture and reflect our candidates’ skills and provide for them a pathway to the workplace or further study.”
