Staff returning after the holidays found hundreds of pounds worth of damage had been caused at the Frances Wright Nursery.
Hooligans ransacked the outdoor play area, destroying the equipment, including a wooden play boat he pupils had only just decorated.
The children’s play house and sand pit were also damaged, while bags of compost were emptied around the site.
Coldside councillor Jimmy Black said: ”I find it hard to understand why they would do it. There are some people who are just disconnected.
”I wonder if they understand that what they are doing is spoiling young children’s days. It’s really too difficult to get into the head of people who do this kind of thing.
”Clearly I hope the police catch them and I’m sure our community safety wardens will be on the look-out to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
”Once we catch them, I think it’s important to find out what motivated them was it drink or drugs or sheer stupidity?”
