A ”twister” appeared in the sky above Angus during Tuesday’s topsy-turvy weather.
After sunshine in the early afternoon, storm clouds began to gather and it was seen in the distance above rooftops in Kirriemuir around 2pm.
Photographer Mike Smith managed to capture an image of the ”twister” after spotting a triangle in the sky outside his home.
He grabbed his camera and got a shot of the freak occurrence, which soon became a topic of conversation online.
Mike told The Courier: ”I used to stay in Canada and I’ve seen them there but this is definitely a first in this area.”
A Met Office spokeswoman said it had been a funnel cloud, formed when the weather is ”unstable” and showery.
She said: ”Tornadoes are narrow, spinning columns of air that reach the ground from cumulonimbus (thunderstorm) clouds.
”As they develop we often see funnel-shaped clouds extending from the base of the cloud and it is only when these funnel clouds touch the ground that we get a tornado.”
