Councillors from across the political spectrum have given their support to plans for a replacement primary school in Burntisland.
Kirkcaldy area committee unanimously agreed to approve a planning application in principle at Wednesday’s meeting.
Detailed plans for a replacement school on East Toll Park for more than 800 children will now be drawn up by Fife Council.
More than 500 people came out against the proposal, including Burntisland Community Council and the Best4Burntisland group, but 175 people indicated support and MSP David Torrance and chairman of the school’s parent council Andrea Stark also backed the plans.
Burntisland’s councillors spoke in favour of the application, with Lib Dem councillor Susan Leslie saying ”concerns have been taken into account”.
Labour councillor Peter George was ”disappointed and dismayed” by the council’s choice of site but added that ”a new school has to be built and built as soon as possible”.
SNP councillor George Kay told the committee East Toll Park is the only site that ”fitted the bill”.
