Firefighters’ warning to tenants after blaze in Lochee multi bin room

Multi-storey tenants have been urged to properly dispose of their rubbish after a fire broke out on the sixth floor of a Lochee block.

Firefighters rushed to Elders Court at about 2.30pm on Sunday after receiving a report of smoke belching from a bin chute room.

When they arrived they found a fire in one of the bags of rubbish left on the floor of the room because it was too big to fit into the bin chute.

Crews from four units, including the aerial platform, extinguished the outbreak with a water jet but needed breathing apparatus to contend with the smoke.

They stayed behind to ventilate the chute room and common landing but did not need to evacuate any tenants from the eight flats on the floor.

Watch manager Fraser Johnston said the cause of the outbreak had been the careless disposal of rubbish but there was a worrying underlying reason for the incident.

”People in the block seem to have been in the habit of placing bin bags full of rubbish in the bin chute room and not actually lifting them into the bin chute,” he said.

”This seems to have been because the bags are too full to go into the bin chute. This is against the rules of the block and also causes dangers as we saw today.

”People shouldn’t fill their refuse bags to the extent that they can’t lift them into the chute and they should definitely not leave these bags on the floor. If they must fill bags that become too big for the chute they should take them down to the refuse skip outside.”
