A man captured on CCTV close to where murder victim John McMurchie was found dying in the street has made himself known to police.

The male stepped forward shortly after an image of him wearing a bright orange hooded coat near the Whitfield Shopping Centre in Dundee was released to the media by detectives leading the investigation.

He was picked up on camera shortly before the 50-year-old father of five from Errol was discovered seriously injured in nearby Fintry Terrace at around 4am on Sunday August 12.

After a high-profile campaign to track down the hooded man, police confirmed they had spoken with him and he had accounted for his movements.

No one has been arrested in connection with Mr McMurchie’s death despite repeated public appeals for information.

In a bid to help track down the person or persons responsible, the crime charity Crimestoppers has increased its award from £1,000 to £5,000.

Senior investigating officer Inspector Bobby Dow said: ”Through our review of CCTV footage we know there were people in and around the lower Whitfield area and we want to speak with them.

”Our attention is focused on the time between 3am and 4.30am. During time we know there were pedestrians in the area and we have recorded around 30 sightings of vehicles passing through the Fintry Terrace/Whitfield Drive area in that timeframe.”

Anyone with information can Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or fill in an anonymous online form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

Alternatively, they can call Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222.
