A Dundee community is in shock after the tragic death of an elderly woman who was involved in an accident with a lorry.
Eyewitnesses say the woman named this morning as Margaret Shaw (80), of Happyhillock Road was crossing the road near her home when the collision with a Spar delivery vehicle happened just before noon on Wednesday.
One man, who was first on the scene, said Mrs Shaw was crossing the road for a bus when the tragedy occurred.
He continued: ”We went over and called an ambulance, but she was already away.”
Uniformed officers stood guard at various points on the road, directing pedestrians away from the scene and diverting traffic on to alternative routes.
A police spokesman added: ”Emergency services were there quickly, but tragically the woman was pronounced dead at the scene … Crash investigators were at the scene and will carry out inquiries into the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
”A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course.”
Stunned residents and shoppers at the nearby Happyhillock shopping centre could be seen huddled together in small groups outside the police cordon and watched as officers carried out their enquiries.
A National Express number 17 bus was parked on the pavement opposite the lorry.
Dundee man David Hughes had been visiting a nearby friend when the tragedy happened.
The 49-year-old said he heard the commotion of police cars arriving but was shocked to learn an elderly woman had been killed.
”My thoughts are with her family. It’s terrible,” he continued. ”It’s not the first time this has happened there was a woman who was knocked down in almost the exact same spot not that long ago.”
Anyone who witnessed the crash should contact Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222.
