Any new signings brought in by Montrose FC before the January transfer window shuts will be part-subsidised by old ink cartridges, broken mobile phones and unwanted DVDs.
Funds from an array of recyclable goods are to be channelled into the Links Park coffers thanks to a novel fund-raising scheme from the supporters’ club.
Collection points have been set up at John Crawford Architectural Services in the town’s New Wynd, a newspaper office in Murray Street and at the club shop, to allow fans to drop in any surplus items.
The idea came from a meeting with the club board, where suggestions were put forward for fund-raising events that didn’t require supporters digging into their pockets.
Plans are afoot to approach a number of other businesses to expand the number of drop stations.
Supporters’ club committee member Chris Smith said, “There is not nearly the same amount of money going around just now as there has been in previous years, so we were looking to come up with a way to raise funds without people having to contribute directly.
“A lot of charities appeal for large amounts of money and people can be quite careful who they give to, so we needed something a bit different.
“We just put out the collection points last week, so I’m not sure how it is going yet, but there are plenty of other ideas in the pipeline.”
Members of the supporters’ club receive discounted entry to all functions connected with Montrose FC and receive a 10% discount at the team shop.
Subsidised buses are run to every away game and seats can be booked by email at busconvenor@mfcsc.co.uk.
