Pupils at Grove Academy in Dundee were given the chance to enjoy free science roadshows, involving everything from extracting DNA to the making of “perfect poo.”

The roadshows, which are organised by Sensation, are aimed at igniting a spark in pupils’ imaginations and interest in science.

Supported by the Scottish Government, the centre can deliver up to 10 sessions of either the Genes in a Bottle or How to Make a Perfect Poo workshop to S2 pupils in one day, with up to 25 pupils per session.

The workshops are very closely linked to Curriculum for Excellence and will continue through February.

Shabnam Wasim, senior science learning officer, explained, “Genes in a bottle is a DNA extraction activity, in which pupils extract DNA from their own cheek cells and take it home in a necklace pendant.

“How to Make a Perfect Poo is a hands-on session following the passage of food through the human digestive system.

“It is a sticky and fun workshop, making it a memorable educational activity for all.”

Dundee University scientists will be there to meet pupils and chat about their careers.

Similar events are being held in schools throughout Perth and Kinross, Fife and Angus.

More information is available on the Sensation website.
