A former Dundee boxer has received a special medal commemorating a victorious bout he fought in London more than half-a-century ago.
Davey Croll (75), who lives in the Carmichael House nursing home near Dudhope Park, triumphed over Aberdonian Johnny Kidd after a second round stoppage in a 1960 lightweight fight.
The encounter took place in the legendary boxing venue at Shoreditch Town Hall in London the same year when the great Cassius Clay won a gold medal in the light heavyweight division during the summer Olympics in Rome.
More than five decades on, the Dundee boxer, who fought 48 fights winning 28, losing 14 and drawing six was recently contacted by the Scottish Ex-Boxers’ Association.
Its members are attempting to track down all fighters north of the Border who fought in the famous venue, and present them with a medal.
The idea came about last January when the London Ex-Boxers’ Association decided to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the first televised boxing match on ITV between Terry Murphy and Lew Lazar.
Around 700 former boxers, including British champions, world champions and journeymen, turned up at Shoreditch Town Hall in September to celebrate the occasion and pick up an individual award.
The money raised was shared between 32 ex-boxers’ associations in the UK.
