Asda is forging ahead with the demolition of the former Angus Council headquarters in Forfar which is to be the site for a new town supermarket.
Four weeks after Angus Council’s development control committee gave the green light to plans for a 4475 square metre retail premises and 16 flats, the scheme to clear the St James site is now well under way.
Sandstone from the building once home to Forfar textile firm Don & Low before becoming the council headquarters for some years ahead of a transfer to the Orchardbank campus is being saved for use on the new superstore.
The company also plans to retain part of the facade along St James Road and The Vennel to screen the service area for the store.
The housing element of the scheme will be located in the north west of the site and incorporate 16 flats in an L-shaped building adjacent to the store. Access will be from New Road.
There will also be a pedestrian link to the centre of Forfar via Little Causeway.
The company hopes to create more than 250 jobs through the project and plans to have the store open before the end of the year.
