No late drinking to celebrate the royal wedding

Well-wishers in Perth and Kinross hoping to toast the happiness of Prince William and Kate Middleton with a late drink on their wedding day have had their hopes dashed.

When licensing board members turned their attention to the forthcoming nuptials, a majority decided there was no need for any extended celebrations.

The board heard there had been a “mixed response” from their counterparts across Scotland with some authorities plumping to extend licensing hours on Friday, April 29, and others deciding not to deviate from standard hours.

Councillor Ann Cowan suggested the standard late hours 12.30am and 1.30am for a function should be extended by 30 minutes into the early hours of April 30 as part of the celebrations.

This was seconded by Councillor Anne Younger, who described it as a “unique occasion.”

Tayside Police voiced no objections to any extension but board convener Councillor Bob Band said he could see “no reason” for additional hours and moved refusal. Councillors Jack Coburn and John Flynn agreed and the move was refused.

Although they won’t be able to enjoy late drinking, employees of Perth and Kinross Council look set to get the day off for the royal wedding. A recommendation to Wednesday’s meeting of the strategic policy and resources committee is that a one-off annual leave day on the wedding day be granted.
