Art students from Adam Smith College have been making waves with their latest piece of public art in Kirkcaldy.
Students on the NQ working with people course showed off their latest creation, Ursula the mermaid, in the Lang Toun, adding to the annual portfolio of work developed under the guidance of lecturer Hazel Terry.
In previous years, the residents of Kirkcaldy have seen Hazel’s students take their larger-than-life creations to visit Beveridge Park, High Street, the Adam Smith Theatre, the train station and various other locations.
From giant dogs and assorted rubbish to enormous seagulls and characters from the Magic Roundabout, they have all brought a smile to the people they encounter.
“The students enjoy the challenge of making the figures and we always use recycled materials,” said Hazel. “This year we used old newspapers from the college’s library to make Ursula.
“Since she is a mermaid, I wanted to make her look like she had just clambered out of the Forth and show her in all her glory on Kirkcaldy Promenade with the wonderful view behind her.
“It’s a practical hands-on project for the students and it never fails to bring a positive response from the public.”
