Young entertainers are being invited to put their talents to the test at an open mic night at Dundee Rep.
Singers, musicians, comedians and poets will have the chance to take their first step on the stairway to stardom or possibly fall flat on their faces.
The event, to be held on Saturday, will be hosted by the Rep’s Young Ambassadors, a group of 12 to 17-year-olds founded last year to try to encourage more young people to visit the theatre. It follows a successful open mic night in November as part of the Rep’s youth week.
Hope Gaffney, one of the ambassadors, said, “It happens upstairs in the bar and it costs £2 for entry, which is pretty cheap. You don’t need to perform if you don’t want to. You can just come to watch and have a good time.
“If you do want to perform, you can do anything stand-up, monologues, singing or play an instrument. Just turn up on the night it’s going to be amazing!”
Anyone interested in taking part should arrive by 7pm to register. Acts will be allocated a spot in the programme on a first-come basis.
Vikki Doig, the Rep’s creative learning education officer, said, “Open mic night will be the exciting launch of our Rep youth week 2011 programme and will be an opportunity for local young entertainers to showcase their talent in front of a supportive and enthusiastic crowd.
“All money raised will go towards the planning of the 2011 festival. There will be mocktails, giant games and a Wii as well as the mic, so there should be something for everyone.”
