Steve MacDougall, Courier, Seagate, Dundee. Scene of an accident, whereby a woman was struck by a bus.

A pensioner has died after being injured in a collision with a double-decker bus in full view of shocked city centre shoppers in Dundee.

The 81-year-old woman, who was from the Arbroath area, had been crossing the busy Seagate near the rear of Marks & Spencer around 3.20pm when the accident happened.

One witness described seeing her lying partly underneath the National Express no. 22 bus.

Harris Academy fourth year pupil Ryan Wighton (15) arrived at the scene shortly after the collision.

He said a crowd quickly gathered, with some members of the public carrying out first aid on the woman, who was at that stage lying on the road unconscious.

“There were a few people performing CPR on her, that was before the ambulance arrived. The lower half of her body was still lying underneath the bus,” he said.

Emergency services arrived shortly afterwards and found the woman to be conscious and breathing but suffering from a suspected head injury.

The woman was taken to Ninewells Hospital for treatment where she died from her injuries on Thursday night.

In the aftermath police officers questioned several people who were in the area at the time of the accident.

They also cordoned off the road from its junction at Trades Lane up to Peter Street as crash investigators moved in, diverting traffic away from the scene. The windscreen of the bus was severely cracked.

A spokesman for National Express Dundee said, “An incident occurred at Seagate this afternoon involving service 22.

“Ambulance and police attended and we are currently supporting them in their investigation.”

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or was a passenger on the bus to get in touch on 0300 111 2222.
