A man who died on Sunday after being involved in an accident with a bus on one of Dundee’s busiest carriageways has today been named by police.
Philip Fleming (also known as Mayenga) of Step Row, Dundee, was crossing Riverside Drive at 3.15pm when he was involved in the accident with a single-decker bus. He was taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital where he sadly was pronounced dead.
It was the second such incident to hit the city in four days, after 81-year-old Arbroath woman Ruth Young was killed when a double-decker bus collided with her on the Seagate.
Sunday’s tragedy took place on a 50mph stretch of the westbound carriageway. It is understood Mr Fleming, who was 33, was attempting to cross the road when the coach, belonging to Park’s of Hamilton, was in collision with him on its nearside.
Police closed the westbound carriageway from the Tesco roundabout up to the bridge.
Inspector Gordon Taylor, head of traffic policing in Dundee, said Mr Fleming received treatment at the scene by an ambulance crew but succumbed to his injuries a short time later at Ninewells Hospital.
Speaking before Mr Fleming was formally identified, he said, “We have closed off the road to begin our scene examination and allow our crash investigators to carry out their work. No other people were injured in the accident.”
He added, “I would appeal to anyone who saw a male pedestrian walking in the area at around the time of this accident to contact police. I would also appeal to any motorists who we have not already spoken to who saw the accident to also contact us on 0300 111 22 22.”
The shocked driver was interviewed by police, as were all the bus passengers who, Mr Taylor said, were also left badly shaken.
The coach had been contracted by Citylink to take customers from Aberdeen to Buchanan Street bus station in Glasgow.
A Park’s of Hamilton spokesman confirmed the coach had been involved in a collision with a pedestrian but said he knew very little about the incident.
He said, “We’ve been on to the police but they said they weren’t releasing any information yet on it. The passengers were shifted by Stagecoach and Citylink buses to Perth and then on to their further destinations.”
He added, “The police have said they are keeping the bus in the meantime.”
As with all sudden deaths, a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal in Dundee.
Tayside Fire and Rescue were also called out later to assist police in clearing debris from the road surface. The carriageway was reopened to traffic just before 8.30pm.
