Dunfermline target victory over Falkirk and a return to top spot

Dunfermline captain Austin McCann wants the Pars to carry their good form into the crunch game against Falkirk.

And he underlined the importance of the game, with three points putting the Pars back at the top of the division.

“We are on a run of good form, are unbeaten at home and have the chance to go top of the league,” he commented. “So it’s all there to play for.”

McIntyre was pleased with the weekend win over Cowdenbeath and wants that to continue.

“It was a Fife derby and is a difficult, difficult ground to go to,” he said. “However, I thought we acquitted ourselves very well. We started the game with a good tempo and the only thing wrong in the first half was that we didn’t put the ball in the net.

“But the players stuck with it and took that into the second half and we got the goal right away. That settled us down and from there we went on to a comfortable win.”

The match at East End Park was rescheduled from Boxing Day, when it was postponed due to the winter freeze, but a win for Dunfermline will see them regain top spot in the first division from fierce rivals Raith Rovers.

McCann told Courier Sport that he was pleased at the weekend 4-0 demolition of west Fife neighbours Cowdenbeath and wants a similar performance against the Bairns.

“Saturday was a great result,” he said. “Going there, with it being a derby, and coming away with a 4-0 win was great.

“We took a lot of confidence from our Scottish Cup game up at Pitroddie against Aberdeen-going so long in the game without conceding. The team have got more conscious of keeping the back door shut.

“We have attacking players who can get goals but keeping a clean sheet was good and hopefully that will continue.”

McCann said Falkirk had to adjust to life in the first division after being relegated from the SPL, but feels they have hit form.

“They have picked up recently and have a bit of momentum, so it will be a tough game,” he added. “This game has added importance to it, but it’s one we are looking forward to and one in which we will hopefully get a result.

“With it being a midweek game it might affect the crowd, but our fans have been great. Hopefully we will keep up the good work for them.”

And Pars boss Jim McIntyre said he believes the home fans will turn out in numbers.

“There will be an excellent crowd at the game,” he said. “I am sure our fans will come out and back us and likewise Falkirk will bring a good crowd.

“Falkirk have had some very good results recently and it’s a derby match. These are the the kind of games you want to play in.”
