A miserable start to 2011 is continuing to place severe pressure on an Angus animal charity.
After seeing a record number of dogs dumped in the first month of the year, Help for Abandoned Animals say they are dismayed there is no let-up in the behaviour of callous owners after three more recent arrivals at their venue near Arbroath.
The dogs two Jack Russells and a Staffordshire terrier are all older and officials say a range of health problems could mean a vet’s bill amounting to around four figures.
“The oldest of the Jack Russells is probably about 12 and has a heart murmur, arthritis and cataracts, and it is just so sad that someone could give up on her like that and just abandon her,” said HfAA vice-chairman Ian Robb.
“The Staffie’s ear canals were found to be completely blocked and she will be on a long-term steroid treatment.”
He added, “It is terrible for the dogs, but it is also very distressing for our volunteers and the awful thing is that we are not yet in what is traditionally our busiest period. Between January and half way through February our vet bill could be about £800 to £1000.
“We get some funding from Angus Council for our role but it is a lot of money to find.”
