Tesco to unveil rival bid plans to Glenrothes public

Supermarket giant Tesco has pledged to push ahead with its plans for a new store in Glenrothes town centre rivalling the interest of competitor Sainsbury’s.

The retailer has confirmed that it will host a two-day public exhibition at the Rothes Halls in the town next month, when residents can have their say on proposals for a new superstore as part of the Kingdom Centre’s expansion.

The plans come after talks in recent years between Sainsbury’s and centre owners AXA/CIS, although no land deal for the site has yet been completed between them.

Tesco corporate affairs manager Gloria Coats said, “Our proposals will provide the Glenrothes community with more value and choice, create hundreds of local job opportunities and help regenerate the town centre by drawing people and businesses to the area.

“We believe Tesco is the right fit for Glenrothes and we’re committed to offering local residents the value for money and excellent choice that they deserve.

“I hope everyone will stop by the exhibition and share their views so that we can deliver the fantastic shopping experience in a convenient location which Glenrothes has waited too long for.”

The Courier revealed earlier this month that there has been some concern about the plans locally following suggestions that Tesco’s interest this after the chain previously looked at coming to the area several years ago, to no avail could delay the regeneration of the town centre.

Indeed, members of the CISWO in North Street, which will be knocked down to make way for the development and the club relocated to a new venue, said they were opposed to Tesco’s application.

However, Tesco told The Courier on Tuesday that it intends to bring forward a detailed planning application for consideration by Fife Council “immediately” following the consultation period.

Tesco’s consultation exhibition is on Wednesday, March 9 from 11am to 4pm, and on Thursday, March 10 from noon to 7pm.
