Dundee-born artist Katie Lowery has been named the winner of the prestigious J. D. Fergusson Arts Award for 2011.
Now living in Edinburgh, she plans to use the £3000 award money to develop a new body of work that will be exhibited at The Fergusson Gallery in Perth later this year.
Katie studied for five years at Edinburgh College of Art and since then has been artist-in-residence at Prestongrange Industrial Museum in East Lothian, and has also regularly exhibited her work in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Millfield House in Somerset.
Fascinated by the fact the Fergusson Gallery where she received her award is housed in an unusual Grade A listed building originally constructed as Perth’s first waterworks, she explained how she will use it as her inspiration.
“Taking the round form of Perth waterworks as inspiration, I will research architecture ‘In The Round’ throughout Britain, from standing stones to the Gherkin,” she said.
“I will explore the history, function, form and context of these buildings through drawing, photography, painting and sculpture.”
