Voters in North East Fife have shown their loyalty to Sir Menzies Campbell, returning him as their MP for a sixth term.
The former Liberal Democrat leader won the Westminster seat with a 9048 majority, securing 17,763 votes.
Second place went to the Conservatives’ Miles Briggs, with 8715 votes.
Jubilant Sir Menzies congratulated his fellow candidates in what he said was a good natured and good tempered fight.
He said, “I would like to thank the people of North East Fife for once again proposing their confidence in me.
“I shall do everything in my power to represent them at Westminster in the way they would feel appropriate to the responsibility of being a member of Parliament.”
Sir Menzies has been MP for the rural constituency since 1987.
After the result was announced at around 1.30am, he said, “I feel the same sense of responsibility on this occasion as I did on the first.
“It’s a considerable privilege to be a member of Parliament and to represent an area of such diversity as North East Fife.”
The QC and former Olympian won fewer votes than at the last General Election in 2005 when he took 20,008 despite a larger turnout.
Third was Labour’s Mark Hood, taking 6869 votes and fourth was Rod Campbell, for SNP, who was the choice for 5685 voters.
Trailing in last was UKIP candidate Mike Scott-Hayward with only 1032 votes.
The turnout across North East Fife was 63.97%, compared to 62.1% five years ago.
In total 40,155 ballot papers were verified.
The Tories’, Labour, UKIP and SNP all saw their vote count up on 2005.
