Dozens of people took part in a charity Zumbathon at Dalgety Bay Sports Centre on Sunday to raise much-needed funds for kidney research.
Chewin’ the Fat and Still Game star Ford Kiernan was on hand to officially kick off the event, which saw fitness fanatics come from far and wide to have a go at the latest craze en masse all in aid of Kidney Research UK.
Local friends Diane Campbell, Lyn Rae and Kirsteen Wright decided to organise the event to collect cash for the worthy cause after a family member had to have a kidney transplant. The trio have already managed to raise over £3100 by climbing Ben Nevis in 2009 but took on the task of organising a marathon Zumba session, not only to boost the charity’s coffers still further but to mark the 50th anniversary of Kidney Research UK.
They approached Kellie Barnett and Amy Buchanan-Salmond, local zumba instructors from JKS Dojo in Dunfermline, and much to their surprise found both girls have themselves suffered from kidney problems.
In addition to giving their services free of charge, the instructors who also teach in Kincardine and Grangemouth donated a year’s free membership to their class as a raffle prize.
Mr Kiernan similarly opened and compered the event free of charge, while volunteers from Queen Margaret Hospital’s renal unit manned the registration desk to answer any questions people had relating to kidney problems.
Kidney Research UK community fund-raising manager Liz McGuinness said, “We find people from this area very generous, not only with their time but with their donations.”
