Major General Andrew Whitehead gives a ringing endorsement of 45 Commando

As Arbroath’s 45 Commando begin to deploy to Afghanistan for the fourth time, one of their most respected former leaders has assured families the men are up to the task.
Major General Andrew Whitehead was the man who famously led 45 Commando over an incredible 80-mile yomp to victory on Two Sisters Hill in the Falklands in 1982.
What he wrote about his troops on the back of a cigarette packet that day could easily be used to describe the bravery that will be required by their counterparts nearly 30 years on.
“Young boys have grown up. Our confidence has blossomed. Our pride has swelled justifiably,” he wrote.
“We have fought and won three victories: over the enemy, the appalling terrain and weather, and our own logistical inadequacies.”
Maj Gen Whitehead, who is also president of the east of Scotland branch of the Royal Marines Association, said the training provided at the Arbroath unit means the soldiers have the capacity to deal with each and every situation that arises.
“No matter where they are stationed one thing is for certain, and that is that they will be well trained and well prepared for whatever awaits them.”
