Bittersweet return for much-loved lollipop man George Brunton

Come rain, hail, sleet or snow George Brunton has stood morning and afternoon for the last 12 years with his faithful lollipop, ensuring children get to a St Andrews school safely.
So when the 78-year-old fell ill and needed to go into hospital, youngsters showed their gratitude using their artistic skills.
Pupils from the nursery up to P7 in Greyfriars Primary School painted and drew pictures for Mr Brunton to wish him a speedy recovery from his heart operation.
When he returned from hospital his wife had carefully laid out the artwork as a welcome surprise.
Mr Brunton who loves his job and refers to the children as his “flock” admitted, “I filled up when I saw them. It was very, very touching.”
Sadly, Mr Brunton’s visit to the school on Monday to say thank you to the kind-hearted children could also be his farewell. Fife Council has announced plans to save cash by getting rid of dozens of crossing patrol posts and Mr Brunton has been told he is being made redundant.
While his redundancy does not take effect until July, he has been signed off work by his doctor until the end of June, so may never be back in post.
