The head of the Salvation Army in Angus has made a special plea to the people of the district to replicate their previous generosity in support of the people of Japan.
Local team leader Major Jim McCluskey hopes county residents will deliver a similar response to that given when the Asian tsunami struck in 2004, when thousands of pounds were donated to assist the emergency effort.
Major McCluskey said the Salvation Army had responded immediately in disaster zones including Haiti, New Zealand, Australia and now Japan.
“We have a presence in all of these countries and are heavily involved in the continuing humanitarian effort in Japan,” he said. “Officials from the Salvation Army are now travelling out to Japan to assess what more we can do and my appeal is for the people of Angus to support our effort in this dreadful situation.
“Following the tsunami of 2004, the people of Angus responded magnificently, raising around £6000 which was directed straight to the work we were involved in there.
“No one can fail to have been moved by the images and news reports which we are seeing from Japan. The quickest and most effective way people can assist at the moment is to make a donation to those involved in the humanitarian effort, and that obviously includes the Salvation Army.”
If anyone would like to donate, the Salvation Army branch would happily accept contributions at its base in Forfar, or can be contacted on 01307 469574.
